For this Christmas Eve Eve service we spent a good bit of time just enjoying each other with food and conversation. Robbie led a few songs on guitar and then Eric shared a message about how we treat each other within our own family at Christmastime. Sometimes our greatest and toughest audience is our own family. Yet, they may need the peace and joy that only comes through Jesus more than anyone else we know. Look for a video of the message if the tech part works out.

This week’s perspective on the Christmas story comes as Art looks at the visit the magi had with Herod. The Jews of the day either were too cozy with him or too pressured by him to notice the arrival of the Messiah. Highlighted are ways God broke convention by using corrupt priests and star-gazing pagans to distribute the news of Jesus’ birth. We all tend to erect false messiahs when God doesn’t come through in ways that we like — often what we need out of Christ(mas) is different than what we want.

In this second message of the Rulebreaker series, Robbie picks up the Christmas story and looks at it from Joseph’s perspective. In a variety of ways, God “broke the rules” in how Jesus came on the scene. He challenges us to consider the faith involved in following God. Joseph had to trust that he was going to be a part of something important and proper even though the setting was one of shame and disgrace. Ironically, we receive something from God (our new birth) because of Jesus’ shame and disgrace (as he died on the cross).
